Should Your Property Be Rewired?
The following are some situations where rewiring may be necessary for your property or business.
Faults In The Electrical System
An electrician should check and test your system if you experience any of the following electrical faults.
- Frequent tripping of fuses
- Signs of burning on sockets
- Switches or sockets that cause electric shocks

Consumer Unit Or Fuse Box That Is Over Ten Years Old
It is a good idea to have your Consumer Unit and wiring inspected by an electrician for safety, particularly if it is over ten years old.
The latest Consumer Units are constructed from non-combustible metal. Older Consumer Units are made from plastic. While many plastic consumer units are safe, they are not up to the latest wiring safety regulations.
Many homes don’t even have Consumer Units and still rely on old fuse boxes and traditional fuses, which use melting wire to cut the electricity.
Old and traditional fuse boxes are less safe than modern consumer units and RCD fuses and should be replaced. Your wiring is probably dated, too and should be replaced.
The Colours Of Your Wiring Are Red, Black & Green (Or Green & Yellow)
During the 1977-2006 period, homes were installed with red, black, green, & yellow wires.
Red, black, and green were the colours before 1977. So your home’s wires are likely over 30 years old if they are these colours and over 40 years old if the earth wires are green.
If the above applies to you, testing and inspecting your wiring is essential to determine its age and condition.
Your Property Is More Than 30 Years Old
Electric wiring should last at least 30 years once installed and much longer under certain circumstances.
It is recommended to rewire your property’s electrical system every 30 years to ensure it is safe.
An Electrician should check the wiring and other components of the Electrical system to see if it has yet to be rewired in the last three decades.
You probably have a sound wiring system if you live in a modern house built within the last three decades. Modern wire colours are brown, blue, green & yellow.
To ensure safety, your electrical system should be inspected every ten years. If you let your property, the system will need to be inspected every five years or at the beginning of each new tenancy.
Increasing The Size Of Your Home
Suppose you are constructing an extension or undergoing a significant renovation to your home. In that case, you will need an electrical system for your new space to power the sockets, switches and lighting.

The complexity of rewiring depends on the type of work, the size, and the condition of your home.
Depending on the size of the job and difficulty, rewiring work may last from a few hours to a few days. For larger, more involved jobs involving moving ceilings and wall boards, you may be required to vacate your home for a few days.
In the survey, our Electrician will review everything with you and provide an accurate timeline of the work involved.
We will notify Building Control of all work before it begins. All work is performed following Part P Electrical Safety Regulations.
Certification proving NICEIC-compliant rewiring will be issued following the completion of the work.
